They Feel What You Hide How Your Energy Affects Your Children
For many years, I used to describe myself as a body with a soul. But lately, I’ve been reflecting deeply on how we are actually a soul and a spirit first—simply carrying a physical body attached to us. If you’ve ever wondered exactly how your energy affects your children, the truth is both beautiful and eye-opening.
Our kids don’t just hear our words; they feel our entire nervous system. Today, I want to talk about how children absorb our hidden stress, and share a powerful somatic parenting tool that will help your child release overwhelm instead of storing it.”If you’ve watched my previous videos on the Medicine Wheel teachings, you know it is a perfect indicator of how energy moves through us at different stages of life. We begin our journey in the East—the direction of the child and new beginnings. In the East, a child is an energy sponge. They soak up absolutely everything in their environment because they are highly sensitive. When a child experiences something unpleasant, they instinctively create defence strategies to protect themselves. By the time we move down to the South of the wheel—our young adulthood—these coping mechanisms have become completely habitual.
As a parent I came to to realize that our children can sense our deepest insecurities, our shame, our guilt, and our fears from a remarkably young age. They feel these vibrating energies directly through our nervous system. Because they can feel it, it stands to reason that they will begin to create coping strategies based on our stress and insecurity. When we enter a state of emotional overwhelm, our children silently take on that heavy energy as if it belongs to them.
So, how do we break this cycle? I want to invite you to try a simple, life-changing shift. The next time you go into overwhelm, give yourself a moment to ground and let it go. Once you are calm, sit down with your child and tell them exactly what happened. Say: ‘An experience just put me into overwhelm. If you felt that heavy energy, it’s completely okay to feel it, but you can let it go now. Don’t be frightened, you just felt my system reacting.’ By doing this, you teach them exactly how to sit with a feeling, acknowledge it, and safely release it.”
When we explain what’s happening, we show them that energy is meant to move, not stay trapped. Try this with your kids—it is so incredibly powerful. If you want to dive deeper into the Medicine Wheel teachings and understand how the other directions affect your life journey,
