The South Of The Medicine Wheel /Where Your True Journey Begins
Today we are going to talk about the south of the Medicine wheel, this could be the start of your true journey your soul’s path. The south also representing the summer and fire as an element.
Today I want to explore the South of the Medicine Wheel. In many traditions, the South represents summer, the element of fire, and that vibrant stage of life where our energy is at its strongest.

Now, let’s come back to the South.
The South is the season of youth. It’s that time in life when we’re full of enthusiasm, curiosity and a real desire to experience the world for ourselves. We want to discover who we are, make our own choices and carve out our own place in life.
For many of us, though, this is also when we begin chasing achievement. We might feel we need qualifications, a successful career, financial security or a certain lifestyle. In Western society, we’re often taught that success looks a particular way. Get the good job, buy the house, drive the nice car and you’ll finally be happy.
The question is… are these truly our dreams, or are they dreams we’ve inherited from other people?
Sometimes we follow a path simply because it’s what we’ve always believed we should do. We compare ourselves to others, believing we need what they have in order to feel complete.
I know I certainly did.
I was driven because I never wanted to experience the poverty I knew as a child. I wanted security. I wanted the things I believed would make me happy. Looking back now, I can see I genuinely thought happiness was waiting for me once I’d achieved enough.
At the same time, I remember the incredible energy I had during those years. I was gaining confidence, earning my own money and becoming independent. There was excitement, possibility and a real sense that life was opening up.
The South is where we begin discovering ourselves through experience. Sometimes we succeed, sometimes we fail, but every mistake teaches us something valuable. Learning is one of the greatest gifts of this season.
As life unfolds, responsibility naturally follows.
Perhaps it’s a mortgage, a new car or the responsibility of raising a family. Maybe it’s a demanding career where people rely on you, and suddenly there’s pressure to perform because your income depends on it.
Little by little, the carefree spirit of childhood begins to give way to adult responsibilities. The freedom we once took for granted starts to fade, replaced by commitments and expectations.
This is also where our relationships deepen. We meet new colleagues, employers, friends and partners. We begin forming emotional bonds that shape us in ways we never expected.
Our inner fire expresses itself through passion, ambition, trust, joy and sometimes even frustration. Every experience reveals another part of who we really are.
From a shamanic perspective, the South is a season where the soul gathers experience. It learns through both success and struggle. We discover our strengths, but we also encounter stress, disappointment and moments when life doesn’t go according to plan.
Eventually, many of us reach a point where life brings us to a standstill. Something happens that we can’t control. A relationship ends. We lose a job. Illness arrives. A loved one passes away.
These moments begin preparing us for the next part of the Medicine Wheel.
Because without summer, we could never truly understand winter.
And it’s often only when our fire has been tested that we begin searching for a deeper meaning to life.
